Joint Solutions
Project (JSP)
The purpose of the Joint Solutions Project (JSP) is
to reduce conflict, fund scientific work on ecosystem-based
management and constructively engage with other stakeholders
involved in land use planning in the Central and North
Coasts, and Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands region
of British Columbia.
It began as an alliance between a group of forest companies
and environmental groups interested in exploring ways
to end the market-based conflict between them over the
forests in this area – referred to as the “Great
Bear Rainforest” by environmental groups.
Starting in January 2000, the intent was to explore
common ground and the opportunity for innovative solutions
to resolve the issues between two traditional adversaries.
The industry participants in this historic process form
the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative.
The Joint Solutions Project is a cooperative initiative
between ForestEthics, Greenpeace Canada, Rainforest
Action Network, Sierra Club of British Columbia, major
forest companies with interests in the B.C. coast--Canadian
Forest Products, International Forest Products, NorskeCanada,
Western Forest Products, Weyerhaeuser--and other parties.
The purpose of Joint Solutions Project is to promote
new ideas for solutions to old conflicts over coastal
temperate rainforests. It represents an attempt by forest
companies and environmental groups to collaborate on
the development of models for conservation and management
of globally significant coastal forests that fully integrates
social, economic and ecological needs.
