Greenhouse Gas Plan
Our Greenhouse Gas emission levels during 2000 were
32,570 t lower (- 4.3%) than the 1990 level. This indicates
that we have achieved and surpassed the target to reduce
our GHG emissions from fossil fuels to 1990 levels by
2000. We project that by the year 2005 our GHG emissions
could be as much as 100,000 t less than 2000 emissions
as a result of a number of projects either underway
or being considered by the company. We conservatively
expect our GHG emissions to be 10-15% below 1990 emission
levels by 2005.
Since 1990, GHG emissions have decreased significantly
per tonne of production at both of our pulp and paper
mill complexes due to energy efficiency improvements
and burning cleaner fuels. Emissions per thousand board
feet at our sawmill operations have also decreased but
less dramatically as decreases in GHG emissions due
to energy efficiency improvements have been offset by
a larger percentage of lumber being kiln dried using
natural gas than in the past.
We now plan to establish a new target - the reduction
in GHG emissions to 6% below 1990 emissions by 2010,
in keeping with the commitment made by Canada in signing
the Kyoto Protocol. As part of this commitment, we will
also continue to report our emissions to the Canadian
Voluntary Challenge and Registry (VCR) office on an
annual basis.
During 2003 we also expect to engage fully in the process
of establishing a sectoral covenant with federal Government.
